This unusual park is an important
archaeological site as well as a scenic recreational area. Seven earthen
mounds within the park were built during the 12th and 13th centuries by
the Swift Creek and Weeden Island Indians. The mounds include
Georgia’s oldest great temple mound, two burial mounds and four
ceremonial mounds. The park’s museum is partially situated
inside an excavated mound, providing an unusual setting for viewing
artifacts and a film.
The park also include a 50 acre and 80 acre
lake which provide excellent fishing opportunities. Outdoor
activities include camping, fishing, picnicking, boating and swimming.
For lodging the park includes tent, trailer,
and RV sites for rent. Also the park provides campgrounds for
rent. Just call the park office for details. In addition
lodging is available at motels in Blakely which is 5 miles south of the
park.
